FC Barcelona 0 Juventus 0 – Lightning does not strike twice....

Juventus have progressed to their second Champions League semi-final in three years after seeing off FC Barcelona in a 0-0 draw in the Camp Nou, claiming a 3-0 aggregate win.

Despite Juve’s 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Turin, the game still had that tense close-margin feel to it, thanks to Barca’s incredible demolition of Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
Juventus though were happy to sit back and counter when they got the opportunity. Despite the plethora of attacks and chances Barcelona had, Gianluigi Buffon did not have to make too many crucial saves.

Juventus showed they have what it takes at both ends o the pitch when it matters and will fancy their chances at lifting the prestigious trophy for the first time in 21 years.

Defensive masterclass from Juventus

Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci must be considered one of the best, if not the best, defensive partnership in the world. They were rock-solid; their timing was impeccable, they jumped in front of every ball to close down their dangerous opponents quickly.

The full-backs were also terrific. Juve would always double up on MSN whenever they were on the ball to put them off their game.

“Everyone was extraordinary tonight and when Andrea Barzagli came on it felt like we could’ve played for a whole day and not conceded,” coach Max Allegri told Mediaset Premium.

Juventus complete 2015 final revenge

Revenge is a dish best served cold as they say in the classics, and Juventus did just that as they denied Barcelona passage to the semi-finals without conceding a goal. The burns from the final in Berlin still linger for the Bianconeri and its faithful.

But now, they will fancy their chances on mending those wounds with another opportunity to reach European football’s summit this season, after beating one of the favourites.

Do Barcelona need an overhaul?

This question could be a bit premature now, however, the question eventually must be asked. Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets are not getting any younger and are not having the same impact games. Ivan Rakitić seems to have peaked too early, when he first joined Barca from Sevilla.
They also need some depth behind their storied front three. That said though, it will prove difficult to convince quality attackers to move to Camp Nou with such quality competition. With a new manager coming into the club next season, perhaps this is the right time for Barcelona to make some personnel changes.

No refereeing controversies

After Tuesday night’s heated game between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, there was a consensus from fans and pundits that there would be some refereeing controversy with Barcelona getting all the calls. That was not the case as referee Bjoern Kuipers played it down the middle, with little to no controversial calls made during the match.
